Online LGBTQIA+ Therapy in Michigan

You deserve support that respects who you are. The Nelson Center for Family Therapy offers online LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy across Michigan for teens, adults, couples, parents and families. Meet by secure video for support with emotions, relationships and everyday life. Appointments are often available within the next week, and our team matches you with a therapist.

Support for your whole life

Your LGBTQIA+ identity is not a disorder or a problem to fix. Therapy can focus on stress, depression, trauma, grief, school or work pressure, relationships, or the emotional impact of discrimination. You can talk about identity when it matters to you without having every session revolve around it.

You may be exploring language for your experience, deciding what feels safe to share, setting boundaries, or navigating family expectations. There is no required label or coming-out timeline. We make room for your strengths, culture, relationships and goals.

What online affirming therapy looks like

Meet by secure video from a private space anywhere in Michigan. Your therapist listens to what brought you in and helps you choose goals that fit your life. You can ask questions, talk through a difficult experience, or practice ways to respond to stress.

Sessions may focus on coping with overwhelming emotions, reducing harsh self-talk, strengthening boundaries, or communicating during conflict. For teens, care can address school pressure, bullying, peer relationships and family conversations. Adults may work on relationships, parenting, work stress or life transitions.

Online therapy is a standard service at our practice. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We will discuss your needs and help match you with a therapist.

The approaches we draw on

Our work is guided by the Person Centered Integration Model (PCIM), which shapes care around the whole person: your strengths, culture, relationships, experiences and goals. Your therapist works with you rather than deciding who you should be or pushing you toward a particular identity or outcome.

Depending on your needs, care may include person-centered support, CBT-informed coping strategies, DBT-informed emotional regulation, mindfulness, trauma-informed care and practical communication skills. The focus is emotional well-being and everyday functioning, with your identity respected throughout.

Support for partners, parents and families

Partners may want help with conflict, trust, connection, parenting or outside stress. Parents may want to listen more openly, repair painful conversations and support an LGBTQIA+ child or teen. Family work respects the dignity and voice of the LGBTQIA+ person while helping loved ones build thoughtful communication. We can discuss whether individual, couples or family therapy fits your needs.

Why some people prefer online

  • No commute, so sessions are easier to keep

  • You can meet from a place where you feel calm and private

  • Busy parents, students and working adults can fit sessions around real schedules

  • Teens often feel more at ease talking from their own space

Online therapy is one of the main ways we provide care, not a backup. If you would rather meet in person, we also have offices in Southfield and Waterford, and many clients mix both.

Insurance and getting started

Most insurance plans are accepted, and many Medicaid plans when applicable. Medicare is not accepted. Call or text 248-301-1080 and we will talk it through. When you reach out, we ask about your needs, goals, schedule, insurance and whether you prefer online or in person, then match you with a therapist.

The Nelson Center provides psychotherapy. We do not provide psychiatry, medication management, psychological testing or emergency care. If you or someone else is in immediate danger or needs emergency medical assistance, call 911. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis and need immediate emotional support, call or text 988.
